Watching at under Windows Services/Processes, the update loaded, and ran. Using Task Manager, you won't be able to understand, which thread (service) causes high load of the system. I tried all steps except step 5 "windows update standalone installer" and it is ok when "windows update" is stopped. We've got a few old 2GB Lenovo/IBM stations that are due to be replaced next year that this was causing havok on. I tested by just disabling the update service and run-away memory problem went away. It solved my problem - the Windows Update service was using svchost and driving CPU and memory usage to the sky. I downloaded and installed with no problem. Pretty obvious where that virus originated. Looking at the titles for those DLL's, one is "Windows Update Vista Web Control",which would be for the wrong operating system, so why is it there?
