This trick is only for reinstalling Windows XP on the exact same computer after formatting the hard drive. As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up anyimportant data before starting. Now the newer one has failed and been replaced with the old one. I would suggest a new computer since a new, full Windows XP license will cost more than the motherboard or than the computer is worth.

For the Repair Install do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). Press Pause/Break again to continue upgrade. Microsoft is very forgiving with computer repair/Upgrades just call them they will re-activate it I have never had a problem with a legal copy. What version is your Windows 7 - is it a single language version for example - the windows 10 version must match as well.
